Glacier lagoons, ice caves, and South Coast wonders
Diamond Beach sits alongside some of Iceland's most spectacular natural attractions. Most visitors combine several stops in one trip. Here's everything within easy reach:
| Attraction | Distance | Drive Time | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon | 0.5 km | Walk (tunnel) | Floating icebergs |
| Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon | 10 km | 10 min | Smaller, less crowded |
| Vatnajökull Ice Caves | 20–50 km | 30+ min | Crystal caves (winter) |
| Skaftafell / Svartifoss | 55 km | 45 min | Hiking, basalt waterfall |
| Höfn | 80 km | 1 hour | Langoustine, glacier views |
Distance: Directly opposite (pedestrian tunnel connects them)
Iceland's most famous glacier lagoon is literally across the road from Diamond Beach. Icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and float in the deep, milky-blue lagoon before drifting out to sea—where some wash up on Diamond Beach.
Allow at least 90 minutes total to explore both Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. Park at either lot and use the pedestrian tunnel to cross safely.
Distance: 10 km west (~10 min drive)
A smaller, more intimate glacier lagoon that's often less crowded than Jökulsárlón. The iceberg views are equally impressive, with the glacier face looming closer.
Distance: 20–50 km (varies by cave location)
From November to March, natural crystal ice caves form inside Vatnajökull glacier. These stunning blue caves are accessed via guided tours only.
Distance: 55 km west (~45 min drive)
Part of Vatnajökull National Park, Skaftafell offers hiking trails through Iceland's largest national park. The most popular trail leads to Svartifoss (Black Falls), a waterfall framed by dramatic hexagonal basalt columns.
Distance: 80 km east (~1 hour drive)
The "Langoustine Capital of Iceland" is a charming fishing town with restaurants, accommodation, and stunning glacier views. It serves as a base for ice cave tours and eastern Iceland exploration.
If you're driving from Reykjavík, these popular South Coast stops are on your route:
A 60m waterfall you can walk behind (weather permitting). Located 120 km from Reykjavík.
Powerful, misty waterfall with a staircase to the top for panoramic views. 30 km past Seljalandsfoss.
Dramatic basalt columns and sea stacks at Vík. Warning: dangerous sneaker waves here too!
