Diamond Beach is about 370 km from Reykjavík — roughly five hours each way — so where you sleep shapes the whole visit. Stay in the region and you can be on the sand for sunrise, catch the aurora over the ice, or wait out bad weather for a second attempt. Day-trip it from the capital and you will arrive in the middle of the day, in the flattest light and the heaviest crowds, after ten hours behind the wheel.

There is no town at Diamond Beach itself — the nearest settlement of any size is an hour away. In practice you are choosing between four bases, each a different trade-off between proximity to the ice and choice of beds.

Wherever you base yourself, most visitors build the stay around a South Coast day trip to Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, a Vatnajökull ice cave tour, a Golden Circle loop, or a Reykjavík whale-watching cruise. The tours below are pulled live from GetYourGuide and update automatically.
The handful of properties strung along Route 1 near the lagoon put you within about ten to fifteen minutes of the sand. The best known is the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, and there are farm stays and guesthouses scattered nearby, including around Hali — which also has the closest fuel station, roughly 10 km east of the beach.
This is the only base that makes a dawn shoot or a late-night aurora run genuinely practical. The catch is supply: there are very few rooms in this stretch, and they book out months in advance for summer. Expect to pay a premium for the location, and expect limited dining options — plan on eating at your accommodation or bringing supplies.
About 80 km east, roughly an hour's drive, Höfn is the largest settlement in the region and the practical choice if you want a proper choice of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, a supermarket and fuel. It is famous for langoustine, and it works well as a base if you are continuing east toward the Eastfjords afterwards.
An hour each way does make sunrise trips to the beach a commitment in winter, though in December and January — when the sun does not rise until around 11 AM — that matters far less than it sounds. Höfn is also the gateway to Vestrahorn at Stokksnes, one of Iceland's most photographed mountains.
Roughly 56 km west (about 45 minutes), Skaftafell sits inside Vatnajökull National Park and is the launching point for guided glacier hikes, the Svartifoss waterfall trail and most winter ice cave tours. Choose this base if the beach is one item on a wider glacier itinerary rather than the main event. There is a large campsite here as well as hotel and guesthouse options in the surrounding area.
At about 190 km west (2.5 hours), Vík is too far for sunrise at Diamond Beach, but it is the standard overnight stop when you are driving out from Reykjavík over two days rather than one. It has a reasonable spread of accommodation and puts you next to Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey and the South Coast waterfalls. A common two-day pattern is Reykjavík → Vík (night one) → Diamond Beach and Jökulsárlón → back or onward.
Overnight parking and sleeping in vehicles is not permitted in the Diamond Beach or Jökulsárlón lots, and wild camping is generally prohibited in Iceland outside designated sites. Use a registered campsite — the nearest are around Skaftafell to the west and Höfn to the east.
Campsites in this region are seasonal, with most operating roughly June to September. If you are travelling by campervan outside those months, check opening dates before you commit to a route — winter closures are common and the gaps between open sites can be long.
