Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Distance: Directly opposite (pedestrian tunnel connects them)

Iceland's most famous glacier lagoon is literally across the road from Diamond Beach. Icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and float in the deep, milky-blue lagoon before drifting out to sea—where some wash up on Diamond Beach.

Why Visit

  • Watch icebergs of all sizes floating serenely
  • Spot seals lounging on ice or swimming
  • Take a boat tour among the icebergs (seasonal)
  • Free entry, 24/7 access

Visit Both!

Allow at least 90 minutes total to explore both Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. Park at either lot and use the pedestrian tunnel to cross safely.

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Distance: 10 km west (~10 min drive)

A smaller, more intimate glacier lagoon that's often less crowded than Jökulsárlón. The iceberg views are equally impressive, with the glacier face looming closer.

  • Kayaking tours available (seasonal)
  • Small café on-site
  • Great alternative if Jökulsárlón is busy

Vatnajökull Ice Caves

Distance: 20–50 km (varies by cave location)

From November to March, natural crystal ice caves form inside Vatnajökull glacier. These stunning blue caves are accessed via guided tours only.

Key Information

  • Season: November–March only
  • Access: Guided tours required (glacier safety)
  • Book ahead: Popular caves fill weeks in advance
  • Starting points: Jökulsárlón or Hali (near Höfn)

Skaftafell & Svartifoss

Distance: 55 km west (~45 min drive)

Part of Vatnajökull National Park, Skaftafell offers hiking trails through Iceland's largest national park. The most popular trail leads to Svartifoss (Black Falls), a waterfall framed by dramatic hexagonal basalt columns.

Hikes from Skaftafell

  • Svartifoss: 5.5 km round trip, 1.5–2 hours, moderate
  • Skaftafellsjökull viewpoint: 3.7 km round trip, 1 hour, easy
  • Kristínartindar: 15 km, 6–8 hours, challenging

Höfn

Distance: 80 km east (~1 hour drive)

The "Langoustine Capital of Iceland" is a charming fishing town with restaurants, accommodation, and stunning glacier views. It serves as a base for ice cave tours and eastern Iceland exploration.

  • Fresh seafood restaurants (try the langoustine!)
  • Glacier museum
  • Accommodation options
  • Gateway to East Fjords
